I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this watch - this particular styled watch from TW Steel sight unseen. I have no regrets. I travel for work and was in San Juan spending some down time around the shops. I stumbled upon a fine watch and jewelry shop and walked in simply to kill time. This is where I discovered TW Steel. I immediately felt an attraction for the watch. They were larger in size to your "normal sized" watch, yet very simple and elegant, while making a statement. I have had the watch on my mind ever since, until my wife decided to purchase it for my birthday. We scanned the watches online, and decided to stop by one of two places in my state that sell the watch to check out what the watch actually looks like on my wrist - this happened to be at Nordstrom's. They did not have this particular model and style at their location, and from the research I have been doing - it looks like this particular model, style and color is limited in production.
While I have nothing but nice things to say about the customer service at Nordstrom's, I would never buy a watch there. Strictly retail - what would you expect? And retail pricing = outrageous to me. This is perfectly fine with me though, since it sets the benchmark for what the watch would be worth, wholesale, resell, etc - and as long as the watch is available elsewhere, in new and unused condition, for a substantially discounted price - I would buy the watch all day.
Full disclosure: I have only owned the watch for several hours, and so far - it has met and exceeded my expectations.
The things I considered when purchasing this watch are (in no particular order): size, color, style, coordination ability with my wardrobe, price, and longevity of style life.
My wife brought something to my attention before she made the final purchase for me which was key: How long are VERY oversized watches going to be in style? There are many oversized watches historically that have survived the fashion waves, (i will spare you naming all of them) - however, most of them are usually <48 mm in diameter, and most of them usually tend to hover around 46 to 45 mm if not a bit less in diameter. So for me, that ruled out the 50 mm version of this model. Although the watch would be an amazing conversation piece at the airport, I don't want to be the guy 3 or 5 years from now sporting a watch that possibly might be a bit too big for the times, since times and fashion do change. So in the spirit of trying to keep a "permanent style", I opted for the classically oversized 45mm version. Now that I have it, I can truly say that it is a perfect size - and in no risk of being the corpulent watch years from now.
The color was much easier to decide. I need something that works with my wedding band (silver), something that works with most of my casual wear, shorts, jeans, as well as my suits and dress wear. This particular color just worked perfectly with my wardrobe. I have other watches of course that may work better with different ensembles, but this watch does the trick in just about every situation.
Style: Less is more for me. I don't know of a single person that actually needs a chronograph. I don't race cars, nor do I compete in relay races, or need to track my laps in the pool. I just don't need those superfluous features. Do you? If so then this watch may not be for you. Part of the reason why it works so well for me is the simplicity of the dial, the numbers, and the only other two items I need day to day, which are the date and day and even without those last two, you can still make it. The Day and Date feature on the watch completes the simple elegance in my opinion. It brings to me more of a classically styled watch, more of a "complicated" feature, without adding a bewildering feature.
If you decide on this watch - you won't regret the purchase. It's a great value, and at the 45mm size, you should get plenty of years of style, beauty and grace from this watch.
